There is a 10% increment on the basic salary where the teacher has a DELTA and where a teacher has extensive business experience, a business degree and some experience of course design they could be employed on the senior teacher rate (650,000)and would teach less hours of class and be available for standby in the other hours. Employees pay into a health insurance scheme and also pension scheme. It is possible to opt out of paying into this pension scheme (13% of your salary) if you have an original degree certificate and evidence that you are paying into a National Insurance scheme in another country. However, if you do this you are not entitled to sick pay from the state (PLT pays a maximum of 10 days sick pay a year). Another option is to pay into the scheme and claim the money back (again for this you need a degree or professional qualification - original certificate and proof you are paying in your own country). |
| National Insurance Does the school pay National Insurance contributions in the UK? |
No |
| Healthcare Are teachers eligible for free state healthcare? If not, what alternative healthcare provisions are made for teachers? |
In Chile there is free health care in hospitals in cases of emergency but most people who can prefer to go private. It is compulsory to pay 7% of your salary to a private health insurance company or the one run by the state. However, for basic medical attention you will always have to pay something (around 3 pounds) although for hospital emergency treatment you are usually covered. |
| Holiday Pay What are the dates of the school's holidays during the academic year? Do teachers receive any days paid holiday in addition to these set holiday periods? |
Teachers receive 30 days paid holidays a year pro rata. These are taken in mid term - second week of August (winter holidays here), a week between Christmas and New Year and a month in January or February (summer here). There are several national holidays which mean extra long weekends. |
| Travel How much will the school pay towards flight expenses? |
Return flight will be paid where teachers stay the full length of the contract. |
| Does the school contribute towards local travel costs? | Where classes are off site and the teacher travels more than 15 minutes to get to the class and 15 minutes to get back the extra time is paid at half hourly teaching rate (3,000). All bus or metro fares are reclaimed at the end of the month. Travel expenses are not taxable but extra pay for travelling time is. |
| Accommodation Does the school provide free accommodation? If so, what is included in this package (e.g. bills) and what must teachers pay extra? If accommodation is not provided, does the school help in finding accommodation? Is there a settling in allowance? |
It is fairly easy to find accommodation in Santiago. PLT does not provide accommodation or pay a housing allowance but will help teachers find somewhere to live and do any negotiations with landlords and check contracts where the teacher doesn't speak Spanish or would like this help. In shared accommodation you can expect to pay around 100,000 pesos a month and in your own apartment between 150,000 and 250,000 depending on how luxurious you want your apartment to be. |
| Other benefits Are native language lessons provided for new teachers? If so, do teachers pay for these? |
PLT does not at the moment provide Spanish classes but can recommend places to study and lend teachers books and tapes. |
| Bonuses Is there an end of year bonus, or incentive scheme, or other benefits e.g. subsidised training courses? |
No |
| Work Visa What is the process? What do teachers have to do? What does the school do? |
The visa process is quite simple. After entering on a tourist visa, the paperwork is submitted for a visa subject to contract. This takes time but you recieve a document saying it is in progress in the meantime. PLT pays for visas subject to contract and will do all the necessary paperwork. |
