Description
The Preliminary English Test (PET) is for people who can use everyday written and spoken English at an intermediate level.
PET reflects the use of language in real life and is accepted by many employers as proof of ability to use English in office type jobs. It is also accepted by a large number of educational institutions for study purposes. It is developed and run by Cambridge ESOL in March, May, June, November and December each year.
PET consists of three papers testing the four skills of Reading and Writing (1 hour 30mins), Listening (30mins) and Speaking (10mins). A computer-based version of the test is also available.
The exam is designed for candidates who are at the B1 level of the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, equivalent to IHWO level 5.
This means that if you pass PET, your level of English is good enough to be of practical use in office-based work and many real-life situations. It also helps to prepare you to take Cambridge exams at a higher level such as FCE and CAE.
Around 1.75 million people in over 135 countries take Cambridge ESOL exams each year. For more information about the PET exam go to the Cambridge ESOL website at http://www.cambridgeesol.org/exams/general-english/pet.html.
