In the OfficeThe school opened in March 1993 and soon became one of the most highly rated
language schools in Vilnius. In 1998 Soros International House became a member
of Lithuanian Association of Adult Education as well as a Center of Foreign
Language Teachers' Training, recognized by the Ministry of Education and Science
of Lithuania.
There are around 1 000 students studying General English and Business English,
as well as other languages: German, French, Spanish, Swedish and Lithuanian
running from beginners to advanced. 25 per cent of the students are younger
learners. A significant part of SIH clients are different governmental and
business institutions who choose to study in groups , in-company or one-to-one.
Over the summer Soros International House Vilnius runs summer
camps for younger learners, summer intensive and regular courses and summer
schools for EL teachers. The school has a library and a self-access centre,
which provide excellent sources of information for learners and teachers.
A successful social programme adds to the happy and relaxed atmosphere of
the school. In addition to our main activity of language teaching, we actively
participate in various local and international projects. SIH is participating
in several local projects, which are concerned with language teaching to the
disabled, and thus providing them with chances of integration into society.
As for international projects, we are taking part (or coordinating) in two
Lingua 1 projects: Lingua 1 'European Languages ABC' and Lingua 1 'eLancenet',
which is meant to promote less widely used European languages. We are also
co-ordinating Grundtvig 2 'PMP' (Practice Makes Perfect: Promoting European
Citizenship Through Language Practice).
