Job Description IH Eastern Spain Group is inviting applications for the position of Director of Studies, IH Palma. The starting date for this post is 15th February 2010, although a later starting date could also be considered.
The school was opened in 1987 and occupies a large, four-storey building in the very centre of the city. There are twelve classrooms and a teachers’ room as well as the reception area and offices. There is also a computer room with Internet access and a small student lounge.
IH Palma has six main areas of activity:
1. Teaching English in the school to the local population (both adults and children).
2. Teaching English and other languages in local companies
3. Teaching English in local schools
4. Teaching Spanish to foreigners (courses run in collaboration with IH Barcelona).
5. Running CELTA courses and other teacher training courses
6. Sending students from Palma to study abroad
At present there is a teaching staff of around 14 (some of whom are on part-time contracts), as well as two receptionists and an administrative assistant. Existing responsibility posts include Director, Head of Spanish, and CELTA administrator/MCT.
The school has a good selection of teaching materials.
Job specification - the main functions of the position are:
• Supervising and coordinating all of IH Palma’s English department’s activities: teaching general and Cambridge exam classes to adults, YL’s and local companies in group and one-to-one contexts; teaching ESP courses (e.g. English for Medicine, English for Engineering) to professionals on-site; teaching English to YL’s at local primary and secondary schools.
• Making and implementing all decisions regarding syllabus and materials design, and course book selection.
• Placement testing at the school and on-site, and moving students up or down levels (particularly in YL classes).
• Ensuring that students, parents and other stakeholders are happy: dealing with problems that arise, particularly in YL classes in-school and off-site; following up behavioural problems noted by teachers; talking to parents about their child’s progress etc; talking to students regarding changes in levels / times / classes / teachers etc.
• Coordinating Parent - Teacher meetings and offering support to teachers when required
• Teacher recruitment and induction
• Teacher education: providing ongoing professional, academic and personal support for around 8 full- and part-time teachers; Running INSETT sessions and workshops twice a month; helping newly recruited staff members (many of whom are fresh off CELTA) with lesson planning; administering observations every term, with written and oral feedback; organising developmental peer observations.
• Teaching between 5 and 15 hours per week of General English, ESP and exam preparation (YLE, KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE and the BEC exams) in group and one-to-one contexts; emergency cover as and when needed.
• Timetabling and scheduling teachers’ hours.
• Dealing with enquiries into one-to-one lessons and arranging a teacher.
• Introducing teachers to in-company students: escorting teachers to company classes on the first day.
• Organising intensive summer courses (July/ August/September): scheduling dates, placement testing and recruiting teachers if necessary.
• Cambridge Exams: Coordinating and organising Cambridge Mock Exams in January for approximately 30 candidates; supporting the Cambridge exam co-ordinator throughout the year.
• Writing PDI forms for IH transfers and maintaining communication with IH World and affiliates.
• Ordering books and stationery supplies: liaising with representatives from publishing houses.
