The City

Durban is a safe, modern, medium sized city located on the subtropical east coast of South Africa. It offers language students an English speaking environment (Durban is the most English speaking city in South Africa), a warm and sunny climate the whole year round, access to international standard English speaking universities, as well as opportunities to experience beautiful beaches, wildlife safari parks and traditional Zulu culture and the Drakensberg mountains.

The School

International House Durban attracts students from all over the world with different first languages. We've had students from well over 42 different nationalities studying at our institute. We treat each student as an individual. The atmosphere is relaxed and personal. Our friendly and experienced staff, which includes experienced tour guides, are always available to help students wherever necessary and have lots of information about tours and excursions in and around Durban. The institute is also a University of Cambridge approved teacher trainer centre. Consequently, all of our teachers are Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) qualified. They receive continual teacher development and ensure that the students receive the best English tuition possible.

The Classes

The minimum study period is 2 weeks. Maximum number of students per class is 9 and the minimum age for the courses is 16. All levels of English are taught from beginner to advanced incorporating General English, Business English, Academic English and IELTS preparation. Students of any level can start on any Monday. Classes last 60 minutes.

Accommodation

International House Durban offers students two types of accommodation: Host family and student residence which is on the same premises as the institute so students do not have to worry about transport to and from classes. Host families also provide transport to and from the institute.

Social Programme

We have a very active social programme with afternoon excursions to cultural and historical sites. We also do fun excursions to shopping malls, cinemas and restaurants in the afternoons and evenings. Once a month we have an IHD party or barbecue where present and past students, staff and host families are invited to get to know each other better, these have always been extremely enjoyable. IHD has a minibus which is used for all excursions.
